President's Message

Dear Members,

I am looking forward to seeing you all at our annual meeting in Houston and Arlington. Exciting changes are happening. Digistar has made a lot of progress in the last year since just our last conference in Salt Lake City. A big step was the very first presentation of Digistar 6 at the 2016 IPS conference earlier this year in Warsaw. Unfortunately, not all of us could be there, but in Houston and Arlington this year we have the chance to see Digistar 6 and enjoy a wonderful extended conference in Texas.

First, we will be in Houston to see the new 8K system installed in the Burke Baker Planetarium at Houston Museum of Natural Science. Carolyn Summers and E&S have worked together to organize this expansion of the conference to Houston. Since the group was already planning to travel to Texas, the DUG officers and conference hosts in Arlington agreed to take the opportunity to add a few days to the conference in order to visit the amazing renovation in Houston, where they now have the first and only “True” 8K planetarium system. This kind of “dual” conference was done in 2000 (in Wisconsin and Illinois) when the first StarRider—precursor of Digistar 3—was installed in Chicago. Of course, Carolyn Sumners has planned a spectacular schedule including a trip to NASA and scientist lectures at the Lunar and Planetary Institute.

Perhaps the most convenient aspect of the conference is that one, regular conference registration covers both Houston and Arlington parts of the conference and even the transportation between the two. We appreciate our hosts for working out this detail, which surely will help many people attend all of the activities.

We travel mid-week to Arlington, Texas, where the conference resumes at the UT-Arlington Planetarium on Wednesday evening. We will have the Business Meeting, talks, demos, and other sessions on campus at Arlington, and we can’t wait to see what our host Levent Gurdemir and his staff have planned for us. I am confident of the quality of our conference due to the dedication of our hosts to all details of the preparation.

As you have no doubt seen already, DUG members have voted on and selected a new logo for our organization. We must congratulate Peter Runge at the Menke Planetarium in Flensburg, Germany for designing the logo which helps DUG to update our image.

DUG has also launched its blog. Please bookmark this web address and check it regularly!

blog.digistardomes.org

The DUG FTP Library password is the same one to use to access the blog. This blog is for DUG members to remain up-to-date of the latest information pertinent specifically to members of Digistar Users Group.

Finally, remember that on Saturday immediately following the end of conference banquet, E&S offers a series of post-conference workshops that will certainly be very interesting again.

My bags are packed…see you in Texas!

With regards,

Markus
