Scobee Education Center in San Antonio, Texas, Announces Open Position

Rick Varner says that with the retirement of Bob Kelley, they are searching for a new planetarium coordinator and would highly value applicants with Digistar experience.

This link has position details (note applications are requested by November 16th). Also, here is additional information from Rick:

The Scobee planetarium has been a part of the San Antonio College campus since 1961 and was renamed for former SAC student Commander Dick Scobee following the loss of the space shuttle Challenger. In 2014, the planetarium became a part of an expansion project to include San Antonio’s Challenger Learning Center as a part of the 22,000 square foot Scobee Education Center at San Antonio College. In January 2016, the Alamo Colleges funded the Evans and Sutherland upgraded Digistar 5 projection system and final modifications to the 38’ diameter, 101 seat full dome theatre.

The planetarium coordinator at the Scobee Education Center is a part of the broader education team in the center and has been cross-trained in the Challenger Learning Center simulator. This skill set provides for a better understanding of the interface between the two programs as students typically fly a simulated mission and a planetarium program during the visit. It also allows for the staff to be engaged at different levels in our educational program development.

The planetarium program runs a typical work day Monday through Thursday for school and community groups and, then, offers three fee based public programs on Friday evenings between 5 and 10pm. The 10” refractor telescope in the rooftop Scanlan Observatory is opened at no additional fee following the last planetarium program of the evening and for special celestial events or star parties.

The Academic Program Coordinator is posted as a S13 exempt position has a minimum salary of $47,486.40, Midrange of $55,556.80 and Max of $66,664. It is atypical for a new applicant to be offered a salary above the midrange; however, for many the costs of living in a southern, non-state income tax state are a consideration for relocating.

San Antonio, Texas is well known for its rich multicultural heritage, history and growing STEM career opportunities. The Scobee planetarium coordinator is a member of talented, dynamic team who ignite the passion for learning and visions of the future for thousands of children.
